Intersections of Hip Hop and Contemporary
Hip hop is my first dance language. As such, it is inherent in everything I do and is the impetus for many phrases. While I love hip hop, contemporary has served as the place I feel most able to express myself as genuinely as possible. Its lack of borders and definition create a space where I can innovate and expand. That said, there is a certain aesthetic that generally encompasses contemporary dance. I want to interrogate these assumptions and divisions, and thread together both worlds. I am currently attempting to understand the translation between these genres and generate correlations to make comprehension easier.
Below are examples of my work in this area thus far, some are excerpts from performances, some are movement research, some are simply exploring what is possible.
